This has been one of the most challenging units in this academic year. It’s challenging on many levels, for example this was my first Documentary and working with an external client on a media project. A good decision was made early on, that was to test and hone our filming and documentary skills by getting involved with smaller but related projects leading up to the main festival. The first project, the filming of the Long Jump gave us some familiarity of what to expect when filming a sports event. This was immediately followed by the filming of the ‘Mini Art of Sport Festival’ which was an even better introduction to successfully producing a sport documentary.

I also watched some example sport documentaries on the internet and was surprised by the poor quality of many that I watched, some appeared to be unedited just visual records of sports events.

I’ve researched documentary theory, the most helpful was the book ‘Introduction to Documentary’ by Bill Nichols from the AUCB Library.

My responsibilities were concentrated on the production of the videos, from visualisation, camera operation to editing and just about everything else in between. As we are a small team of 2 we often had to get involved in areas outside of our respected responsibilities particularly as this was essentially a client based project. We had technical issues; problematic equipment, location generated problems. These problems were added to by the need to satisfy an external client. Therefore I found myself in the position of having thought the job was done only to have to go back to the project and re-edit or make changes to the opening or end credits.

I also designed the end credits using images and logos approved and/or supplied by the client. It was fairly boring orginally so I added a card swip effect using After Effects and added some sound effects to punch it up a little.

As per the requirements of this unit a paper record of all our correspondence with the client, pre-production notes and associated processes are contained in a folder, which will be made available for assessment.

The Art of Sport Festival

With the completion of the Mini Art of Sport Festival I had in effect a working template for the main event ‘The Art of Sport Festival’ which took place on Friday 4th May 2012 at the Redlands Centre in Weymouth. From the experience gained from the preceding event I asked Aleksandra to obtain a camera and also asked Georgie Hewitt who I knew was good at filming with a DSLR to join us on the day. My idea behind this was that whilst I would film the days events and activities using mainly long and mid shots, Aleks and Georgie would concentrate on close ups and alternative angles to the ones I was using.

My plan for this project was to look for new content to film, the idea being that this could be added to by suitable video clips taken from the Mini Art of Sport Festival if necessary. I suspected that we would end up with considerably more content than what would be required for a 2 minute film or a 5 minute film and any duration in between.

I also thought it would be a good idea to create a variety of edits using different styles, for example 1 edit could be in a Corporate style and another more targeted towards a more general audience and maybe a 3rd just for children. These edits would be made available to the client should they want them.

We were fortunate on the day with the promised rainfall thankfully absent, I’d had visions of all 2,000 children relocated to the undercover facilities and the cancellation of some of the activities. However with the changing cloud cover the available light changed as well and so some sequences appear dark while others are bright. When working on the edits for this final project I am grateful to the pre-production planning where I decided we really must have an additional camera in order to cover the activities, shots and opportunities that may be missed by not having that additional resource. I have used footage from all 3 cameras in the editing process.

We have footage for several edits and should be able to satisfy the clients immediate and future requirements. For the purposes of this unit and the rapidly approaching deadline I have produced example edits based on the clients previous requirements, but I’m sure we will have to make changes to these depending on the media platform they will be displayed be it for a TV using a DVD or for upload to the Internet for video streaming.

In conclusion I think that overall this unit has gone well with the clients requirements having been met for the 3 projects. The team has worked well, each of our skills and abilities complimenting each other. What would I change if I had to repeat this type of assignment? to be honest not much, it would seem to be obvious to enlarge the team size but I would disagree, a larger team may have presented more problems than it would have solved. For example increased logistics, higher costs and associated additional equipment requirements may outweigh more any benefit it may have had. If I was to be critical I would say that we would have reduced our, or in particular my workload, in post production if I had determined our clients wishes more satisfactorily. I made the mistake of assuming that my requirements for the completed edit would closely match the clients, this was proved to be an incorrect assumption on my part. The solution to this would have been to involve the client earlier and throughout the stages of the post production process. However in my defense some of the changes were introduced late in the process for example the addition of more logos and changes to some of the edits to exclude individuals from the final edit.

Mini Art of Sport Festival – Evaluation

This was an enjoyable project, we were basically set an open brief to document the days events, the only restriction was that some of the children could not be filmed other than that we could decide ourselves on the best approach and the content that we would generate.

I’ve documented the days events in a previous blog but essentially, apart from some technical issues we successfully completed the planned filming and created a few set pieces which could be used to enliven the final video. On the whole I think we were satisfied by what we had achieved between just the 2 of us using the resources we had to hand.

Then in Post Production I became suddenly aware of the clients change in requirements and how they would differ from my own. Up to this point and on previous projects the only person I had to satisfy with my finished creation was myself, while keeping an eye on satisfying the brief and feedback from lecturers. For this project I produced a number of video edits (7 in all) until I had a final video which satisfied the clients brief, which included the following:-

  • must be no longer than 3 minutes long,
  • must not show/identify certain individuals,
  • must use only authorised logos and laid out in a particular sequence.
  • must be in .MOV file format

On top of this the video needed to include particular activities and people. Of course these requirements changed/evolved over the Post Production process hence the high number of edits produced.

Finally we advised the client on the presentation of the video for the VIP’s on the day of the Festival, suggesting that they abandon their original idea of using projection. That instead they secure a large screen TV or LCD panel for the day as this would cope more effectively with the lighting conditions (viewing in a marquee in full daylight). The Plasma TV they sourced had a built in DVD Player and good sound quality which solved the problem of linking DVD Player and Sound System to the display.

The early versions of this video was plagued by its audio, even though a directional microphone was used the ambient noise in the Sports Hall created by 100’s of children drowned out the voices of the interview. This was unsolvable although I attempted a variety of sound filtering using Audacity and Soundbooth. The only solution was to record again the interview sequences in a controlled environment. While doing this I had the idea to use this opportunity to record an interview specifically for the Art of Sport Festival in anticipation of similar problems with sound on the day. (This was proved to be the right decision)

The Long Jump Project and Video – Evaluation

As I mentioned in my Blog entry for this project I was really pleased with the outcome, the final video coming very close to my original visualisation. Although we had all kinds of problems scheduling the shoot everything came together on the night. Our preparations and pre-production were up to the job and the shot list completed in good order with time to explore alternative angles and shots.

The post production also went as planned and I soon had 2 edits which I was pleased with and importantly satisfied the client.

If only all projects had progressed so satisfactorily.

Assisting MA Student – Samantha Else on her project producing a Gallery Exhibit for the AUCB along with fellow DMP 1st year student Michael Moore. The exhibit will essentially follow on from the live performance detailed in the Blog posting Green Screen – A Midsummer Nights Dream

This part of the project endeavors to immerse the audience in the mind state of Ophelia as she progresses through her madness. Samantha engaged actress Robynne Batley to play the part of Ophelia from Shakespeare’s Hamlet.

Filming in the Studio – Studio Lighting Setup

Following Samantha’s directions Michael and myself setup the Studio Lighting Setup and positioned the cameras to video the acting sequences from 2 angles, from directly in front and to one side. We used Digital SLR’s for the video recording, my personal Canon EOS 60D and one of the Universities Canon EOS 5D MKII’s.

I was slightly disappointing by the performance of the lighting equipment we used, the studio itself is an amazing space for this type of video work but the relatively low power of the lighting appeared to be absorbed by the white walls of the space. Studio Lighting Setup had to be revised to make the most of the low power lighting. This was resolved in the end by re-positioning the lights closer to the subject but even then I did notice a distinct colour change depending on the distance of the subject from the cameras lens and lighting source. I’m certain this effect could have been reduced by using say a Blond Lighting setup of at least 2KW.

White balance also became problematic in the space with lighting a mix of natural light, fluorescent and incandescent, in the end I went for fluorescent setting which was in retrospect the wrong choice but this can be corrected in post.

Michael plans to combine the video footage taken from the 2 camera viewpoints in post production in order to endeavor to create a 3D image which he plans to project onto a number of blocks using video mapping and Modul8 application.

Filming on the Beach

The 2nd part to the days video filming took place on location at Bournemouth seafront where we filmed Ophelia looking out to sea and running madly between the Pier supports.

The Video sequence above was taken by Samantha using my Flip Ultra HD camera hand held, which I then imported and edited in Adobe Premiere. In keeping with the projects theme of Ophelia’s madness I decided to reverse the video clips so that the waves appear to roll away from Ophelia. I then added a musical soundtrack mixed with the sound of the waves and the voices of people on the beach. (this is for my Blog entry only and will not form part of the exhibit)

The next step in the project is to finalise the sound recording, film any additional footage that maybe required and then to actually experiment with the projection and setup of the exhibition space.

VJing – Modul8 Getting Started


I’ve downloaded the demo version of the VJing App Modul8 that we use at University, they have some MacBook Pro’s with this software installed for student use for live Video performance and so I’ve installed the demo on my Mac so that I can practice using the application before using it in any projects.

Initially I thought it was difficult to get started with Modul8 but after reading the manual – that’s right I actually read the manual I’ve since found it an easy App to use. It has drawbacks but these can be adapted to or worked around. But what it really needs is an input device which the App supports via a midi interface.

This device would make it easier to control the sequence of videos easier than using a computers keyboard or mouse. Alternatively I notice it is possible to design Modules and maybe I’ll look into putting one of these together or maybe modifying an existing one such as the slide-show module.

Interestingly I notice it also supports DMX which means it should be possible to integrate lighting control, making it easier to control the whole performance from one laptop.

I’ll update this article with some more posts once I’ve had time to really get to grips with the App and see what it can do as it is currently being used in a MA students live performance of Midsummers Night’s Dream that I’m assisting with so hopefully I can pass on some insights later.



HDR Video – Researching HDR


I also found a very useful article on Macworld which goes into how to create a Time lapse HDR Video using a DSLR and stills bracketing. Bracketing is when the camera takes a picture and then automatically takes another over and under exposed. Using software these images are combined into one giving a true HDR effect.

We continued to work on the development of the personal portrait in class today.

Following on from my work earlier in the week  and armed with my Photoshop Montage I looked at importing the images into Adobe Premiere Pro in order to investigate how I could develop my still images into a moving image. By experimenting with the import options, I tried something new, at least for me by importing the complete Photoshop PSD file as a  sequence. I was gratified to see that when the entire PSD with all it’s layers were imported each layer was assigned separately and in sequence to the workspace. I’d only imported merged layer images previously, having control over the individual layers offered much more options for video transitions.

This would make the design much simpler as I’d be able to work on the individual layers but as they had been imported in the planned sequence the final image/montage would be achieved just by running this sequence. The effect that I wanted to achieve could be done by applying a Transition to each individual layer.

Personal Portrait – next steps

I already had some idea of how I wanted the film to progress, I wanted to show how the entire image was made up of individual layers/images and how they all come together to make up one big picture just like a Jigsaw puzzle. I positioned each layer roughly in time sequence onto the video tracks, offsetting each video tracks starting position by a few seconds. I continued to do this until all the layers were added and then played it. The result worked but was somewhat boring as each individual image popped into existence as the film progressed. It was obvious that some kind of effect was needed at the beginning of each track as it started.

After experimenting with a number of 3D Transformations I settled on ‘Spin In’ as the most effective. Each image would now appear from the centre and spin to it’s position in the Montage. I was really pleased with this initial result and could see that with further development and refinement this would be a very effective video sequence which could either stand in its own right or could be included in a longer video sequence with more elements to be even more effective.

Starting with all the photographs that I had scanned into the computer the previous weekend, I began to isolate the image I wanted to include in the Portrait by removing it from the background. I used Photoshop CS4 and the Magnetic Lasso tool to follow the image around it’s edge before cutting this out and making a new image ready for adding to the final 2D Portrait as a new layer.

I repeated this for all the images I wanted to include in the final Portrait and so armed with over thirty images I set about designing my personal portrait by importing each of these images that I’d carefully removed from their backgrounds into the new one.

I initially thought I’d make the final image follow a timeline, a sequence starting with the earliest photograph and building up until the final image of me in 2010. Although this seemed to make sense the initial result looked too regimented and the overall effect was less than I’d hoped for. Instead I looked at the images and decided it was a puzzle and it would be better to match images and shapes much like a Jigsaw and so like in all good Jigsaws I started with the edges first. This seemed to go much better especially fitting those photographs with a straight edge to the images edges. There was no time-line to the image now but I made sure that the most recent photograph was located centrally so that all the other images seemed to be related to the most recent one of myself. I then included some images of activities that are important to me that is cars, motorcycles etc.

The final image looked as good as I’d hoped but I felt it still needed an Artistic edge otherwise it looked just like a collection of photographs cobbled together rather than a carefully constructed piece of artwork. Knowing the available filters in Photoshop I knew that what I wanted was the final image to look like a Poster and so I applied the ‘Poster Edges’ filter to the merged layers of the Montage. This gave a good overall effect but some of the images looked blurred, out of focus and so I decided the only way forward was to apply the ‘Poster Edges’ effect to each of the individual layers adjusting where necessary the amount of effect the filter had on the image. this worked much better and as well as controlling the effect on each image it allowed me to balance the effect across the whole Montage in particular balancing the photographs in Black and White with those in colour.

With the still version completed I then began to think how it would work as a moving image. Referring back to my earlier ideas I realised that none of them would achieve the result that I wanted although they could be used in future projects and so I needed a new idea. The one I came up with followed the idea I had in producing the Montage that is looking at it as a puzzle and eventually as a Jigsaw and so I thought make the process of making the Montage from the individual pieces coming together just like a Jigsaw into a film. This would also have the additional effect of showing how through the images I have chosen, I have become the person that you see now.

Idea Development

My idea for a self portrait starts with Family and of course the Family photographic albums which are a record of my life over the decades. My idea was originally Influenced by Bob Cottons lecture and in particular of his short film representing 100 years of Media.

I decided I would look at producing a film along similar lines combining personal portraits/photographs and any videos of myself with iconic images/photographs representing major events, people and things that have directly influenced my life and which have all contributed to make me the person that I am today.

Issues I will have to address include the copyright of images that I use that have not been produced by myself. It has been suggested by Amanda that if I take the photograph myself for example of an album cover or other items representing a key element in my life this should suffice in regard to copyright.

My thoughts regarding technology are that still images could be imported into a slideshow program for example Windows Movie Maker to produce a video sequence. These individual video clips would then be in turn imported into a Video Editing application such as Adobe Premiere Pro where both the slideshow and video’s could be edited together to produce a final video sequence to which sound/music could be added.

It would be great if I could add either some kind of artistic look to the finished artefact or indeed look at some form of interactivity, although I think I’d like to save this for a future project to allow time to investigate motion tracking technology and the devices designed to track movement for example Microsoft’s new Kinect which seems to offer low cost motion tracking possibilities.

Researching and selection of Still Images

Unfortunately many of the photographs I have of myself are not in digital format and so would have to be scanned before they can be imported into the slideshow application. I would also have to obtain some photographs from other family member’s photographic albums.

Unlike the current generation especially in respect of media students where almost everyone has the
means to take a photograph or indeed video thanks mainly to the advance in Mobile Phone Technology. My generation relied on the ownership of cameras usually in the domain of enthusiastic amateurs and the processing of photographic film. So I’m finding that many key points in my life do not actually have any photographic record and indeed some decades for example the 1970’s are almost bereft of any photographs.

Using Photoshop to produce the images used in the sequence and then Premiere Pro to edit the images into a moving sequence. Used the Video Transformation Effects and Motion controls to produce a video sequence that just needs text to complete.

Principles of Computer Graphics: Montage

My first project was to develop a self portrait from Magazine and Newspapers.Home[5]

The image to the right was created from Magazine and Newspaper cuttings to produce the overall montage. In no way was the image intended to be a true representation but only to convey an overall impression. Some of the text used has meaning eg. Comedy, Africa etc.

The typography images on this page were created from using the design tools on the Wordle website. The designs were produced by either entering the text from documents or direct from other web pages and then manually manipulating the layout and font options to create the final design. Then using Paintshop Pro X the image was captured from the screen, resized and exported as JPEG images.

1.1  Develop a concept of moving image sequence

Genre: Supernatural Thriller

The Hook (logline)

Dave a Serial Killer confronted by and judged by his victims in his dreams is found guilty and is dragged down and into hell.

The Synopsis


Opening scenes

Dave is sleeping fitfully at a table when he begins to hear voices. The voices grow more distinct and suddenly he finds himself standing at a lectern surrounded by darkness when a face appears before him. This is the face of his prosecutor and judge.

Main Character – Dave

Dave an ordinary looking guy, who is assumed from his appearance to be leading a perfectly normal life and to be working in a boring 9 to 5 job etc But he is in fact a Serial Killer who lives out his fantasies at night stalking the streets looking for his next victim. Six years later and he’s killed his 6th victim he now finds it’s easier to kill the 7th and now he’s up to 12 in just 7 years.

But he’s haunted by his victims who talk to him in his sleep until the night it all becomes real.

Scene 1

Dave has fallen asleep at a table it is a fitful sleep the voices torment him as usual their overlapping voices crying out and begging for mercy but they are impossible to hear clearly. Then there is silence until suddenly there is just one voice calling his name over and over again.

Dave awakes but instead of being asleep at a table he finds himself standing at a lectern in semi-darkness. The voice comes again from out of the darkness and then a disembodied face appears before him.

The face unknown to Dave does not give a name but begins to inform Dave that he is on trial for his soul.

Scene 2

One by One the faces of his victims appear out of the darkness in turn accusing Dave of their murders. Only the disembodied faces of Dave’s victims are ever seen and they appear to float in the darkness.

The verdict is guilty and the judge tells Dave that his soul will be collected and taken to hell.

Scene 3

New voices come out of the darkness darker and menacing. Hands appear from out of the darkness encircling Dave from behind and begin dragging him struggling into the darkness. A final cry from Dave as the darkness envelopes him.

An alternative end is to have Dave dragged invisibly into the darkness where the hands then reach out to grab him and drag him to Hell.

Fade to end credits.


Voices – Script (First Draft)

Opening scene

Dave is sleeping at a table in front of his Wall of Newspaper cuttings showing all his crimes, his murder victims and how the Police are still baffled by the “By The Numbers Killer” – when he begins to hear voices. The voices grow more distinct and suddenly he finds himself awake and standing at a lectern/dock in near darkness when a light suddenly comes on and in the surrounding darkness a face appears before him.

Scene 1

Judge:              David Wake up – Wake Up David

Dave:               What’s happening – how did I get here – who – what are you

Judge:              David Tiberius Gregorshi you stand here now to face your accusers – to account for your crimes and to receive our judgement for the final destination of your immortal soul.

Dave:               I must still be asleep – I’m just having a bad dream – I’ll wake up soon and this will not even be a memory.

Judge:              This is no dream you are here to defend yourself – you are accused of the murders of so many people – each one an innocent victim chosen at random by you. Behold the first one comes.

Scene 2

Amanda:          I remember the eyes – no emotion – dead eyes – yes he’s the one who killed me.

Dave:               It’s not true – I’ve killed no one – it’s a lie I tell you – all lies

Judge:              David you have not understood why you are here – we know you are guilty of all the crimes you have been accused of – that you have killed all these people to satisfy your evil desires your only hope of salvation of your soul is the forgiveness of your victims. That there is some small hope that there is something good in you that will save your immortal soul from eternal damnation.

Amanda can you ever forgive him – to save his soul – forgive him for his crime against you.

Amanda:          I’m sorry but I cannot – I only met him that one night – and then there was the horrible things he that did – no I can never forgive him – I can remember every second of that night as if it had just happened – no I can never forgive – let him rot in Hell.

Judge:              Thank you Amanda – I’m sorry you had to go through this – you may leave us now.

Dave:               This is insane – I don’t need this  – I’m leaving – What the hell I cannot move – what have you done to me – why can’t I move.

Judge:              You have no choice – you cannot leave – a judgement must be made – you must hear from your victims.

Behold the next one comes

Mary do you know this man before you – is he the one

Mary:              I did not want to come the memories are too painful – yes he’s the one – he’s the one who killed me – may his soul rot in hell for all eternity.

Dave:               It’s not true they are all liars – anyway I do not believe in all of this – there is no Heaven just as there is no Hell – this is all a trick to get me to confess – but I won’t you see –  there’s nothing you can do that can make me.

Judge:              (The Judge turns to his left and looks into the darkness). My brothers have we heard enough or do we still need to call the other witnesses. (He nods as if answering someone although there is no sound)

A judgement has been reached –  my brothers and I have no doubt that there is no hope for you – you have shown no remorse for your actions – indeed I can even now see into your mind that you plan to go on killing.

Our judgement is that you will indeed suffer for the evil that you have done – that your soul suffer the eternal horror that is hell – the demons have been summoned, they will be with us soon – do you have any last words.

Dave:               Fuck you and your demons – I’ve told you before I do not believe in any of this crap – now let me go before I break free and do to you what I did to all those others.

Scene 3:

A Terrible noise comes from behind Dave

Dave:               What was that terrible noise – it sounded like the screaming of thousands of people

Judge:              They are here – the demons from Hell have come for you – they only wait for my word before dragging you to Hell.

Dave:               Wait, I’ve changed my mind – I take it all back – please don’t let them takes me – I beg you, just give me another chance.

Judge:              I see now that you realise the truth – you have no understanding of what awaits you in Hell – your imagination at it’s worst cannot even begin to compare to what your immortal soul will have to endure for all eternity – the time for remorse has passed there can be no appeal.

The camera turns towards Dave. The Lectern has gone and Dave is on his knees seemingly praying.

Dave:               Don’t let them take me – please, I can make everything right – please don’t let them take me – just one more chance.

Judge:              Demons – The final judgement has been made – follow your master’s orders and take him now.

Dave is grabbed invisibly from behind and dragged kicking and screaming into the darkness. Hands reach out from the darkness to drag him down into Hell.

2.2 Research Content – Film Influences

The original inspiration for the Film Voices comes from an award winning Theatre production called ‘The Verdict is Yours’ produced by the Festival Fringe Theatre Company rather than from a Film. In the play the main character the man accused of murder is visited in his jail by the ghost of his victim. A trial is played out on stage with the audience acting as the judge and jury, deciding the fate of the accused murderer from evidence provided by a live prosecutor and the ghost of the alleged murder victim. The audience was left to decide whether premeditated murder was committed or was it an unfortunate accident? A key part of the original production was the magical appearance of the ghost who appeared to be floating on the stage.

Film inspiration comes from the iconic film ‘Silence of the Lambs’ the characterisation and visuals associated with and played by Anthony Hopkins. The idea that a relatively ordinary and sane looking man could have perpetrated such violent crimes. A serial killer and cannibal a terrifying idea and against the moralities of modern civilisation. The idea of making the Voices character to appear as ordinary as possible would add to the effect of  Film on the audience implying that no one knows who anyone really is.

the wall camera positioning and zoom operations etc. The films narrative also offers ideas on how to develop the script for the film Voices.

Another influence comes from the 1990 film Ghost in the scene where the murderer of Patrick Swayze’s character Sam Wheat by the character Willie Lopez played by Rick Aviles who having been killed in a road accident is pursued and caught by the shadows (minions of hell) in a New York street witnessed by Patrick Swayze’s character. The scene ends with Willie Lopez being dragged backwards into the darkness and presumably to Hell. The sounds used in the film an angry growling type noise was particularly effective and it would be worth attempting something similar in the film Voices.

Another example includes the Film Franchise ‘Nightmare on Elm Street’ where there are multiple scenes of victims being dragged invisibly across walls, ceilings and corridors. A simple similar effect could be achieved by tying a rope around the actors’ waist and dragging him backwards ensuring the rope is not visible on camera.

In general the visualisation for the film will use many of the techniques familiar to Film Noir in particular lighting effects. The aim is to light sparingly as there will be little set and target lighting to the faces of the ghosts only leaving the bodies unlighted. This will give the effect that they are disembodied – voices only. Using the 1994 Film ‘Double Indemnity’ as a good example of Film Noir in particular it’s lighting which mainly concentrates on the faces of the characters. This effect could be achieved by using hand held torches; experimentation would be needed to see how effective would be including the possibility of mounting a light on the camera or tripod so that light only appears where the camera lens is pointing.
